How Long Should I Crank the Generator?

It can expose an existing contamination problem. I would not say that running a tank empty magically “sucks up all the sediment,” because fuel pickups are already drawing from near the bottom of the tank during normal operation. However, a very low fuel level can make water, sludge, rust, or microbial contamination more noticeable if the tank is dirty.

If the generator runs out and then repeatedly plugs the filter, loses power, or shows water in the separator, I inspect the tank instead of assuming the issue is only air.

What Happens to the Electrical Load When the Generator Runs Out of Fuel?

This is the part people sometimes overlook. When the diesel engine loses fuel, the electrical output can disappear suddenly. Depending on the generator controller and alternator system, engine speed may drop before shutdown, which can lead to underfrequency or undervoltage protection trips.

For a home, that may mean refrigerators, pumps, lights, computers, and HVAC equipment shut off immediately. For a business, it may interrupt production equipment, servers, refrigeration, or controls. For a medical or life-safety application, even a short interruption may be unacceptable.

If I am powering sensitive or critical loads, I use proper transfer equipment and, where required, a UPS or other ride-through system so the load is not depending solely on a single engine staying fueled.

Should I Keep the Diesel Tank Full?

For standby generators, I generally prefer keeping a healthy reserve rather than routinely operating near empty. A fuller tank reduces the chance of an unexpected run-out and may reduce the air space available for condensation, although fuel-storage practices depend on tank design, climate, and local regulations.

I also rotate or test stored fuel as appropriate. A full tank of contaminated diesel is not a reliable emergency supply.

Does Running Out of Fuel Affect the Fuel Filter?

It can. If the tank contains sediment or water, a run-out event can coincide with a plugged filter or water-separator issue. Also, opening the system to prime or service it can introduce contamination if the work is done carelessly.

If I replace a filter after a run-out, I use the correct filter and follow the manufacturer’s filling/priming procedure. I keep dirt away from open fuel fittings because modern injection systems are much less tolerant of contamination than older mechanical systems.

What About Large Commercial Generators With Day Tanks?

Large standby installations may use a main storage tank plus a smaller day tank near the generator. A transfer pump automatically keeps the day tank filled. In that type of system, “running out of fuel” may actually be caused by a failed transfer pump, closed valve, clogged strainer, level-switch fault, or empty main tank.

If a commercial generator unexpectedly runs dry even though the bulk tank still contains diesel, I do not just add fuel to the day tank. I investigate the transfer system because the generator will fail again as soon as the local supply is depleted.
